it had been multiple days of dark, dark nights. the regent insists of it! “by nighttime,” she stated, “everyone is asleep. there is no need for lighting, for your eyes will be shut anyhow!” it was that night–that night where her hair was oh so frizzy–that she started to become the “poor regent” to other civilizations. “she mustn’t have any money left,” one woman spoke, “i had a peak at her quarters–” “how did you get a peak of her quarters!” “that–that matters not! but i mean to say that her quarters–they were filled with treasures!” the group of gossiping women gasped at the statement. “which treasures?”
by that time, everyone had already gathered around the gossipers and listened intently. the fireplace cackled in the silent air before the lady spoke once more. “she had fine necklaces made of gold, not to mention pillars of just–some precious mineral…!”
everyone rioted in disbelief. “that’s what she’s spending our money on?!” “absolutely shameless of her!” “i say we defund her…”
but here the town lied, in deep darkness for several days. “tch, did the regent really forget that some of us work in the nighttime! because of this new law of hers… i have been laid off work.” the lounge is dark–only lit by a single candle! men groan about how absolutely selfish the regent had become. “if only there were an ambitious little girl–like from the movies! who would talk to the regent for us…”
oh how prayers get answered easily in this small, humble town.
an ambitious little girl with one candle in hand knocked on the regent’s door. a tall guard answred, “what is your purpose of visiting?” “to see the regent,” she said, her soft voice resounded through the expensively cheap porch. “the regent is not going to change her mind about the power. the darkness will remain at night. please do not bother.”
just before the door shuts, the little girl stops the door with her little shoe. “it is not about the light,” she lied, “it is–um.. about the well by the river. it is dysfunctional.”
“...i see. please, come in.”
the regent’s house was… well, dark. the hallways were lit with multiple candles, but those not bright enough to actually contribute light. “please follow me to the regent’s room.”
the floors creaked, the house reeked of essential oils, and faint glints of gold were scattered around the rooms and hallways. the guard knocked at the door, “a little girl wishes to see you,” he spoke, “regarding the…well by the river.”
“come in.” a strong, feminine voice resounded from the door. the guard twisted the doorhandle and pushed it.
here the regent sat, smoking a cigarette and fidgeting with a gold coin. she was clearly inebriated.
the little girl kneeled, “please, regent! you dont understand the suffering of our little town without light–we absolutely need it! even though most of us are getting shuteye at around this time, there are others that arent, and even those who have jobs in the evening! i will do anything for you to restore the light here, anything i say, even to become your servant… i am not opposed to if you will bring the light back.”
the regent sat in silence before laughing a laugh full of despair.
“you dont get it, little girl,” she sobbed. “she wont let me..!”
“she wont let you? who?”
“the regent of the moon! oh, ive upset her deeply. she wont even let me talk to her… guard! another box of tissues, please!”
“you and the regent of the moon are having a lover’s quarrel?”
“i suppose you can call it that… but dont misunderstand, it is unrequited love.”
“worry not, my regent. i will fix it.”
“fix it?” the regent laughed. “you cant fix it, child” she dropped her precious coin with a thump. “i couldnt fix it…” she sobbed once more.
the little girl stood tall, the candle on her hand running down her arms at this point. but no, this didnt make her squeal the slightest. “i can fix it. if i have to talk to the regent of the moon myself, then so be it. i will climb the stars and the heavens to reach her if thats what i have to do.”
“stop this nonsense! why would she listen to you of all people!”
“because i am not you”
this effectively shushed the regent. the little girl kicked the door open and watched herself out.
well, apparently the guard is the eavesdropper in the situation. as soon as the little girl was out of sight, he changed to his civil clothes and went outside.
“some little girl is going to fix our problem with the lights!” he barged into the lounge. “she intends to go to the moon herself!”
“to the moon?! herself?!”
“all i know is i owe that girl a meal at the bistro, huhu!”
“please, bring us back the light and return safely, girl!”
all the men shouted. hooray!

the hike to the moon was nothing fancy. although some clouds refused to cooperate and some stars threatened to let her float in space, she made it safely adn at last.
and there she saw her: the regent of the moon, pale-robed and silver, eyes heavy with sadness.
“who are you, child?” the moon regent asked. snow foxes fetched her yet another box of tissues to capture her tears.
“a messenger,” the little girl said. “your lover on earth cries for you. she fills her house with gold but none of it warms her heart. she has darkened the whole town with her sorrow. will you not forgive her?”
the moon regent frowned. “if you are here to talk about the earth regent, then please see yourself out. my fox will escort you back home.”
“please! listen to me, the town i hold dear to my heart craves the light of the night. without you, our evening men cant work, our paths cant be lit, and the heart of our dear regent can never be filled again!”
the moon regent sobbed. “she called me too cold to love. too cold! how could i forgive that?”
“but you are cold,” the girl said. “and she is warm. don’t you see? one without the other is nothing at all.”
the moon was quiet. then, little by little, her light began to grow.
“fine,” she says. “i will talk to her. i will… glow once more. for you, her… and your precious species.”

the townsfolk could see once again, without any candles needed!
everyone who wasnt getting shuteye cheered.
the little girl was escorted back to the town with the moon regent’s fox.
in the morning, the regent announced the coming back of the light. she sends the moon regent a flying kiss, and so does the moon regent.
